A roundup of failures, prospects and slight shifts in retail

The closure of the Dick Smith chain of stores across Australia and New Zealand earlier this year has likely stored in a distant corner of our memory banks. Not so it seems for those who are pursuing senior management for incompetence.

Failure to grasp the fundamentals

It is reported that some people in senior positions at Dick Smith failed to grasp the fundamentals of retail trading, thus the group floundered.

When is profit healthy, fair and reasonable?

The New Zealand economy is so active, that I believe that a number of key issues are being overlooked due to the pursuit of profit. In fact "profit" is the dominant key motivator for any activity.

The recent purchase of the Fashion Island shopping centre in Tauranga by Cotton On Group received little publicity, but is quite a significant move in terms of shopping centre ownership. Why would a retailer buy a shopping centre in a regional New Zealand location?

One Plan to Rule Them All

Six years after the Auckland Council was formed, we finally have a Unitary Plan: a new district plan for the region, replacing a raft of old plans and the old Regional Policy Statement. What a process it’s been. Multiple iterations of the Plan, with consultations, submissions, and hearings. Politicking and grandstanding, special interests, and more information (and misinformation) than anyone could take in.

Last week I wrote on retirement villages and the money that is being made by developers at the expense of retirees; the response that I’ve received suggests to me that all is not well in that camp. A review of the process and the financial gains is required.
