Christchurch Airport

New Zealand's second largest airport facility, Christchurch International Airport (CIA), extended and refurbished their international passenger terminal as part of a long term terminal expansion programme. CIA understood the importance of retailing’s contribution to cash flow and investor returns and sought RCG’s skills.

RCG undertook a major piece of research to establish the market size in order to assess the mix most suitable for Christchurch, both landside and courtside, to generate sales projections and enable sales performance benchmarking and to assess the financial feasibility of the project. RCG used a range of service disciplines throughout the project, i.e. retail planning, leasing and fit-out documentation and professional administration, all the time working closely with the CIA terminal architects and project managers.

The solution worked with both passenger and master/greater flows to improve the overall customer experience and to create a unique feel for retail within the terminal. An iconic mural of the Canterbury region was designed and this was inset into the main walkway. Within the functional constraints of the Airport’s requirements such as security, customers, and MAF, RCG also created 3D signage which accentuated the merchandise mix and complemented the individual retailers.

Throughout the exercise RCG also worked with several high profile brands including Ballantynes, The Airport Bookshop and the Christchurch Antarctic Centre. The way finding, retail branding and specialist fit outs RCG created helped maximise peak sales and reduce passenger pressures.
